Elbert County Sheriff Shayne Heap signed an executive order July 16 easing the Stage 3 Open Ban enacted earlier this year.

Recent rains and sustained moisture levels prompted the reduction to Stage Two restrictions, according to a press release from the Elbert County Office of Emergency Management.

Effective immediately, Stage Two restrictions prohibit:

• Open burning, with the exception of charcoal grill fires, fires in approved portable exterior fireplaces, and outdoor welding or hot work.

• Outdoor smoking, with the exception of smoking within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.

• The sale or use of fireworks.

• Use of educational rockets.

The Stage Two restriction remains in effect until modified by either the Elbert County Sheriff or by the Board of County Commissioners.

Open burning at either places of business or private homes still require a permit from local fire authorities.
