Elizabeth High School senior Ben Campbell, 17, was killed and two other students severely injured after a car crash Oct. 11 in Elizabeth.

Junior Amber Wilburn, 16, was airlifted to Swedish Medical Center, while the driver of the vehicle, senior Izzy Veed, 18, was taken to Littleton Adventist Hospital after the crash.

The Elizabeth Fire department said the crash happened around 2 p.m. on County Road 21 and involved another vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle has not been identified, but was a 19-year-old woman from Elizabeth. She was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

The Colorado State Patrol said the students were in a 1996 Buick Century, traveling east on County Road 154 when the Buick stopped at the intersection of County Road 21. The Buick then pulled out in front of a Jeep that was traveling north on County Road 21. The Jeep did not have a stop sign.

The accident is still under investigation, but investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved.

School was in session on Wednesday and a crisis center was established in the library at Elizabeth High School.

“This is a tragedy for these families that is shared by the students, faculty, staff and community of Elizabeth,” EHS principal Greg Wieman said in a statement.
