Citing extreme fire risk, Kiowa Fire Protection District officials have announced that the town’s annual Lights in the Sky Fireworks celebration and chili cook-off scheduled for June 29 at the Elbert County Fairgrounds has been canceled.

According to a June 24 press statement, continued dry, windy conditions, as well as statewide red-flag warnings contributed to the decision.

There are no plans to reschedule the event. Kiowa joins a growing list of other communities in canceling holiday fireworks shows.

Colorado Springs, Fremont County, Highlands Ranch, Monument and Commerce City have also canceled fireworks shows due to extreme fire risk.
