Toys for Tots run coming up in Elbert County
For years the EC Riders of Elbert County have given back to the community by sponsoring the Toy for Tots Run, and this year will mark the eighth event. Each year the riders unite in an effort to provide new toys for children in need in Elbert County.
The 2011 Toy for Tots Run is Nov. 5 and will begin at the Stagecoach in Franktown and end at Casey Jones Pavilion in Elizabeth. Registration for the parade begins at 8 a.m., with departure from Franktown at 10 a.m. Cost of admission is a new un-wrapped toy or a cash donation. Every type of vehicle is invited to participate in the parade.
Once at the pavilion, the EC Riders will host a chili lunch, silent auction, live auction and door prizes. People who don’t do the run, but want to donate a toy, can show up at the pavilion for all of the festivities. Event organizer and EC Rider, Steve Valdez, said all of the toys will be divided between the Elizabeth Fire Department for their Christmas toy drive and Kiowa Creek Community Church. All monetary donations will be used to buy toys for both organizations.
“We get a list of ages and the gender of the kids who are in need of toys, but we don’t get any actual names,” Valdez said. “And we use that list to buy the toys.”
The Elbert County community has been a great help in the effort, Valdez said, stepping up every year with monetary donations and silent auction donations. Without the generosity of the business community, it would be a lot harder to provide the toys, he said.
“The EC riders continue to do this because it is our way of giving back to the community,” he said. “We know there is a need in the county and we try to do what we can to help.”
The riders are also hoping to get students involved in the toy drive. Valdez has taken flyers to the elementary schools that will be sent home with the students about the toy drive. He hopes the students feel inspired to help their fellow peers.
“We are trying to get the word out to the kids telling them to help Santa Claus help other kids who are less fortunate,” he said. “The kids can bring a new toy to the event at Casey Jones Pavilion and also have the chance to meet Santa too.”
Toy bins are also set up at area business in Elizabeth for people to drop off new toys as well. The bins will be available until the end of November and those toys will also be donated to the children in Elbert County.
