Trump must allow probe
Will President Donald Trump fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller? For a year, the question has sucked the oxygen out of any room with a reporter in it. Here’s an idea: Let’s provide an answer, in the negative.
As a Republican and as an American, I have my issues with the Russia investigation, and I’d like to see it wrapped up. What I can’t abide, however, is an overreach from the Oval Office to make that happen.
The independence of the U.S. Justice Department is a core tenet in our democracy, fostering citizens’ trust in government regardless of which party is in power. To break the faith — whether by removing Mueller directly or sacking Rod Rosenstein to the same end — would do irreparable damage. Even current speculation is harming the country.
That’s why President Trump should state unequivocally he will let the investigation be. Congress may also want to pass legislation declaring that this or any future special counsel can only be fired for cause. Although I wholeheartedly believe President Trump’s comments on Mueller reflect his flair for baiting the press, not his actual plan of action, America only gains from strengthening the rule of law.
Plus, putting the Mueller question to rest is a smart play before the mid-terms. The left is rabid for impeachment to overturn the last election. But it is off-putting to independents and moderates, and even Republicans, who care about the Constitution.
Republicans have long been the defenders of the Founding Fathers’ vision. By allowing the Russia investigation to clear the President, we will burnish our reputation as the true champions of America’s sacred institutions. That alone would take a lot of water out of the Blue Wave we keep hearing about.
