She was honored for her solo composition, “The Torii Gates,” motivated by gates that washed away from Japan in a 2011 tsunami and eventually washed up on the coast of Oregon, where they were taken to the Portland Japanese Garden, where they were identified, repaired and eventually returned to a Japanese village. It can be seen on Downing’s Youtube channel.
