The cause of death of a Kiowa High School teacher was asphyxia, authorities say, but the manner in which he died is still under investigation.

On June 14, Elbert County deputies responded to the area of County Road 194 and Kiowa Bennett road and found the body of Randall Wilson, 52. His body was found in a field near the roadway. Wilson was last seen in Bennett around 10:45 p.m. on June 13 purchasing fuel from a gas station.

Investigators said Wilson was returning home after visiting family out of state and his body had been in the field for at least 12 hours before being found on June 14.

The sheriff's office is working with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Douglas County Crime Lab and the Elbert County Coroner and are asking anyone who has been in recent contact with Wilson or observed suspicious activity in the area to contact the sheriff's office at 303-621-2027.

Investigators will not say if Wilson was targeted or a victim of a random crime.
