State representative to Elbert County Sen. Greg Brophy, R-Wray, was chosen Nov. 6 by his colleagues to be the assistant minority leader in the Senate.

The assistant minority leader slot is the No. 2 leadership position for the Republicans in the state Senate behind the minority leader position, which was filled by Josh Penry, R-Fruita.

“I was really honored to be elected to the position by the other Republican senators,” Brophy said. “I serve with great people and earning their trust as assistant leader means the world to me.”

During the caucus meeting, the Republicans nominated four people for the four leadership positions and cast unanimous ballots for each.

“We didn’t win as many races as I hoped we would win,” Brophy said during his acceptance, “but the people in Colorado and around the nation proved that they share our values when they voted on ballot initiatives. This is a center-right state and the U.S. is a center-right country; the citizens proved that by voting for freedom, traditional family values and against tax increases. We will enjoy electoral success again for our candidates soon.”

The legislative session will begin in January. Brophy is expected to play the role of guardian of Republican values during the next two legislative sessions.

“I expect to spend a lot of time helping my colleagues communicate our conservative message to their constituents through traditional and new media efforts,” Brophy said.
