Cards finish season

The Cardinal volleyball team had its district tournament site moved to D’Evelyn Oct. 25 because of a scheduling error. That gave the Cards a higher position in the league standings, but tougher district matchups.

The first match of the day put Elizabeth up against Fossil Ridge from the perennially tough Northern League. Fossil Ridge had the size advantage, but the Cardinals were determined to put up a good showing. They represented the school well as they battled to a tough loss, 21-25, 25-23, 24-26, 26-24, 3-15.

The Cardinal attack was led by Hillary Hawkins with 15 kills. Andrea Grassnick added seven more while Naomi Tubbs, Melissa Lail, and Erika Owen put down five apiece. Owen also led the Cards in blocks with six. Kelli Christiansen contributed 25 assists, and Mackenzie Fischer served five aces. Despite the loss, it was the best team effort of the season for Elizabeth. The hours of practice spent on footwork, passing, and communication paid off.

In the second match of the day, the Cardinals faced Jeffco league champion D’Evelyn. In game one, the Cards pushed the Jaguars to the limit, but they came up short 27-25. Then D’Evelyn’s superior size took over as they won the final two games 25-18, 25-16. Hawkins again led the team with eight kills, while Christiansen had 14 assists. The team earned the respect of all the teams at the tournament with their consistent serving, their hustle and their determination. Elizabeth finished the season with a 9-12 record. The team will graduate four seniors as they prepare for next year.
