Elbert County libraries offer summer programs

Pines & Plains system touts in-person programming after COVID-19 restrictions

The Pines & Plains Libraries system has many new summer programs and events this year for residents of Elbert County. After COVID-19 restricted activities over the past few years, many of these programs encourage in-person participation and getting back to the libraries.
This year’s summer reading program runs through the end of July and has the theme of “Oceans of Possibilities” and is open to kids, teens and adults. “Since we weren’t able to do many things in the libraries last summer due to COVID, will be going all out with programs and activities for all ages this year,” said Jen Yadav, Pines & Plains Libraries activity services guide. “We’re hoping to get people out and about, and back into the libraries.”
The Pines & Plains Libraries will be using an online tracking system for the summer reading programs called ReadSquared in which participants can track their activities and reading. Participants will acquire points by reading and completing activities and missions throughout the summer. Points allow participants to win prizes, with grand prize awarded to the top point earner at the end of the summer.
“We hope summer reading programs and activities will draw in reluctant readers, encourage reading over the summer to help children keep their skills up, and to generate excitement for and encourage reading to become a lifelong habit,” said Yadav. “Overall, we’re really trying to generate interest in the libraries themselves. In Elizabeth we have a lot of people moving in and they might not know we have many branch libraries in the area.”
In addition to the Oceans of Possibilities summer reading program, each branch library has programs and activities:

● Pirate/magic show
● Ocean-themed talks on sharks, bioluminescence, and watersheds by the Ocean First Institute
● Stargazing and sun-gazing activities
● Ocean-themed crafts and activities throughout the summer
● Storytimes on Mondays at 10 a.m. and Thursdays at 1 p.m. with activities
