The Elizabeth Fire Protection District responded to two calls
within one week from Elizabeth High School regarding potential gas
leaks.
The first call was Feb. 20 and the second was Feb. 24. The first
was during school hours and forced students out of the building for
a half an hour while the fire department tested the building.
Superintendent Paul Dellacroce said first incident was not a gas
leak and may have been exhaust fumes being sucked back into the
building.
“There was one small hole in a gas line in the kitchen,” he
said. “But there wasn’t even enough gas to register on the
Elizabeth Fire Department’s detector.”
The second call was an actual gas leak in the boiler room in the
school due to a bad valve. A janitor smelled the gas early that
morning and immediately called the fire station. The high school
was clear by 7:40 a.m. and the valve was replaced by 10 a.m. and
all other valves in the boiler room were checked for holes.
Dellacroce said the school’s gas company, Black Hills, also did
a thorough inspection throughout the school.
“The gas company did not find anything in the school and parents
have nothing to be worried about,” Dellacroce said.
