Frost warning at championship

David Frost got a grip, and now he’s got a shot.

In Saturday’s third round at the Senior PGA Championship, Frost shot a 65, a course-record in a competitive round at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker.

The South African is now 2-under-par for the tournament, four strokes behind the leaders, Jay Don Blake and Tom Lehman.

After a disappointing 77 on Friday, Frost tweaked his grip after watching Tom Watson hit balls on the practice tee.

“I picked up a little grip change that I thought I should do, and that helped today,” Frost said. “So unbeknownst to him, I did learn something from him.”

Frost sunk four birdie putts on the front nine and three on the back nine.

“I struck the ball very well from the first tee onward,” he said. “The putts I made weren’t very long putts.”

Fred Couples went into the round as the leader at 7-under-par, and went into the back nine at 6-under. But he double bogeyed the 10th after four putting, then followed that up with consecutive bogeys.

Couples rebounded with a pair of birdies and finished the day 4-under-par. He was tied with Mark O’Meara, who recorded a round of 67, for third.

A pair of Castle Rock residents survived Friday’s cut. Bill Loeffler rebounded from Friday’s 82 to shoot a 69, making him 4-over-par for the championship. Gary Hallberg shot 76 and is 6-over-par.
