Holiday meal for seniors

Posted

For three years now, Kiowa Creek Community Church has provided a free homemade meal for local senior citizens.

This year on Nov. 24 more seniors enjoyed the meal than ever before.

The Kiowa Creek Community Church fellowship hall was filled with over 50 seniors visiting and eating a meal made just for them. Holly Haan coordinator of the meal said because the senior centers in the county are closed Thanksgiving week, some seniors may end up not having a good meal for the Thanksgiving holiday.

“We had seniors coming from all over the county,” she said. “We even had some seniors come from Goodwin Manor assisted living home in Elizabeth.”

Seniors interested in the meal, but not capable to go to the church were delivered a meal so they would not miss out on the good food. Haan said even though there is not a meals on wheels program in the county, seniors in need of food can get help from the church food bank.

“Any senior can call to see if they qualify for our monthly boxed meals,” she said. “We deliver the boxes each month. Or they can stop by the church food bank.”

The holiday senior meal was a community effort with women in the church working together making the chicken cordon bleu and pork chops from scratch.

“Most of the seniors didn’t want turkey this year, so when they heard what was on the menu they got really excited,” Haan said. “I think that may have helped getting more people here.”

Ebert County Coalition for Outreach provided the center pieces for the tables, blue poinsettias.

“I got a shipment in of all blue poinsettias and I didn’t know what I was going to do with all of them,” said Pam Whitucki, director of ECCO. “But when Holly called and said she needed center pieces I knew I had just the thing to fill up the tables.”

Any senior citizen in need of supplemental food and groceries can contact the church at 303-621-2376. Also any other Ebert County resident in need can also contact the church for more information on available programs or visit http://kiowacreek.org.
