Precautions for pets in the county

Posted

Elbert County Health and Environment has tested another rabies positive skunk, having bitten family pets in northern Elbert County on Dec. 23, 2009.

Elbert County Health and Environment strongly suggests that the following measures be taken by all Elbert County residents:

1. Please have pet's rabies vaccinations brought up to date by a veterinarian.

2. Please keep pets under control. Do not let them run freely. Please keep them in a fenced yard, kennel or indoors.

3. Remind all children that they should not approach stray animals or interact with wild animals.

4. Please feed pets indoors. Secure any barn feeds in closed containers. Assess the home area to make sure that trash or any food source does not attract wild animals such as foxes, raccoons or skunks near the house.

5. Please report any aggressive, sick or sluggish animals to the Elbert County Health Department at 303-621-3144, Elbert County Animal Control at 303-621-2030 or the Colorado Division of Wildlife at 303-291-7227.
