A proposal to redevelop the old Kmart site inside the southern edge of Englewood is just one step away from becoming a reality.
At a Sept. 3 Englewood City Council meeting, council approved a zoning change on first reading that would clear the way to turn the Kmart site into a building that offers restaurants, self-storage units and retail spaces. The site, located at 200 W. Belleview Ave., would be renamed The Hive on Broadway.
In order for the project to move forward, the William Warren Group is seeking a zoning change that would permit self-storage on the west side of the building in order to obtain financial stability to market the rest of the redevelopment. The real estate company owns the self-storage brand StorQuest.
Englewood City Council voted 4-2 with one abstention on the first reading zoning change. City Councilmembers Rita Russell and Laurett Barrentine voted against the change. The proposed rezone will go to a final vote on Sept. 16.
