Dave Lancaster, a seventh-grade student at Kiowa Middle School, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee in January. The school-level bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 21st annual National Geographic Bee. The bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

Participating in this year’s bee were thousands of schools from around the United States and the five U.S. territories. After the school competition, winners from each participating school took a written test. Up to 100 of the top scorers in each state became eligible to compete in their state bee, which will be April 3 at the University of Denver. Lancaster was notified last week that he would be one of those students for the second consecutive year.
