Two Elbert graduating seniors earn scholarships

Two Elbert County graduating seniors are the recipients of $200 scholarships.

McKenzi Digby and Drew Button earned the scholarships, sponsored by Elbert County Sun Country Family & Education.

Digby, graduating from Simla High School, plans to attend Northeastern Junior College in Sterling where she will pursue a degree in agricultural business and animal science. A 4-H member, she has held numerous offices at the county and district level and was selected as a Citizen Washington Focus Delegate and traveled to Washington, D. C. She is a member of the 4-H Livestock Judging Team that competed in Kansas City as well as attending the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Ga.

McKenzi also earned the honor of Colorado State 4-H Modeling Champion. School has also given her leadership opportunities as National Honors Society President, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Future Business Leaders of America and Student Council. Playing the piano for the Ramah Baptist Praise Team has been an outlet for her passion for music.

Button, an Elizabeth High School graduate, will enter the watershed science program at Colorado State University this fall. Grade school science fairs inspired an interest in water use and conservation and understanding its cycles and properties in nature. With a passion for the outdoors he has worked outdoor related summer jobs, loves to hike and hang out with his friends and family and enjoys fine art and music.

Through the Boy Scouts of America Drew completed his Eagle Scout project restoring the entry zone of his church where he has been an active member. Through the student council at Elizabeth High School he was able to complete smaller scale community service projects.
