Street fair to bring community together

The Town of Kiowa is bringing back an old tradition.

Many years ago, the town hosted the Kiowa Street Fair and now the fair is headed back to town. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 15 at A.F. Nordman Town Park located on the 100 block of Navaho and Arapaho, Kiowa residents can enjoy an afternoon of activities and live entertainment.

Kiowa Town Clerk Michelle Oser said this is the first time the Kiowa Street Fair has been back in about 100 years. She is hoping for a successful event for families to enjoy together and also to promote Kiowa.

“We want to make it an annual event which will get bigger and better every year,” she said. “The town is hoping it will grow so that people can walk from the park all the way to the high school enjoying activities and booths while checking out the town on their way.”

This year people who want a booth during the fair are in for a bargain because all booth spots are free. Oser said there are 56 booth spots and currently about 50 of them are filled. Anyone who is interested in the last few spots can contact Oser at 303-621-2366.

Different organizations in the county will be providing activities for the kids and Court Appointed Special Advocate association, CASA, will provide an air jumper. Oser said this year the fair is not costing the town much money because of the help of local organizations donating their time.

“The Elbert County Health Department is providing seatbelt safety for parents and the Kiowa Fire Department is bringing their smoke house,” she said. “Everyone seems really enthusiastic about it and I think it will be a lot of fun.”

Local band Equal Distance will provide free live music, the Kiowa library is hosting a special event for kids during the street fair and the Elbert County Museum will be open for extended hours during the street fair.

Oser said the Kiowa Street Fair is the only event the town runs completely on their own.

“The town just wants people to come out and have a good time,” she said. “And with so many organizations having booths, we want people to realize these organizations are out there and are involved in the community and want to help the people in Kiowa.”
